Build Your Links Naturally Not Artificially

There are many companies in the internet offering Directory Submission at a very small price, some are averaging .20 cents per submission. At the beginning, I was always tempted in availing these kinds of services specially knowing the importance of web directories in link building, but as I gained experience, submitting your site to numerous directories all at once will do more harm to your site than good. You may be able to acquire hundreds of links in a very short period of time but search engines will know that this has been made artificially and you have no assurance if your website has been submitted to reputable web directories or not.

Avoid Acquiring Baclinks Artificially

Search engines want any website to grow naturally, this includes the process on how your website acquire quality backlinks. If a website acquires numerous backlinks let’s say a hundred in one month then zero on the following month, search engines will know that this was done artificially. Even someone without any experience in link building will notice the inconsistent fluctuations made whether you are availing the services offered by the companies mentioned above or your doing it yourself. Try to acquire backlinks consistently, it is more productive to acquire two to ten quality baclinks every month and focus your energies to acquire links from reputable sites as this would count more than it would from spammy websites.

Give Webmasters a Very Good Reason to Link to You

Acquiring quality backlinks is not that easy, you have to show in the web that your website is worth linking to. Even acquiring quality backlinks from reputable web directories, either free or paid will not assure your website of being listed, it will undergo reviews if your site complies with their submission guidelines. It’s the same with article directories, it would take a quality article in order for them to accept your writing and acquire a quality backlink in return. Same is true with other website owners, the contents of your website must be worth enough of its importance for them to link to your site. It takes a lot of work and dedication to achieve a reputable website but trust me, the rewards are enormous.

What About Reciprocal Links

Use your gut. Trading links is natural and it’s natural to have reciprocal links. At some level, natural reciprocal links happen, but if you do it way too often, it looks artificial. My advice is to go with your gut and if you’re worried, you can use nofollow. – Matt Cutts (source)

Reciprocal linking if done naturally and NOT excessively is not in violation of Google’s policy. Although Google did not really define quantitatively what “excessive” really means, Google’s Matt Cutts advises us to follow our instinct and sound judgment by what excessive means. In my own view, before you do any reciprocal linking, check first the reputation of the website, ask yourself if this website is worth linking to but when you are in doubt just stay away or you can exchange link but use the “nofollow” attribute.
