Why Link Building is So Important!

When I first started using the internet, I first thought that search engines (I only knew Yahoo.com, MSN.com and Google.com during those times) were the ones who were in control over the web, until I realized that search engines are also websites, no more special than any other website you would see in the internet. But what makes them important is the ease and simplicity they provide to internet users. Try to imagine an internet user who needs information in the web but doesn’t have any idea where to go to or doesn’t have any specific website address (URL) to visit. He goes to a search engine website, let’s say Google.com, he types the important keywords that he needs to find and within less than a second, Google.com returns a list of thousands or millions of web pages from various websites. Now how did this happen? Google.com made it easily through the links among websites existing in the web. Now if your site has no incoming or outgoing link or if your link has not been linked (submitted) to any search engine website, relatively speaking, your website does not exist.

Existence

In the internet, a website is evaluated for it’s usefulness, even if your website has the information to turn iron into gold if you don’t establish your reputation well enough, such information is useless. Well, it’s pretty basic, you need links to establish your existence in the web. But you don’t need a bazillion links to shout in the web that you exist, during the early stages of your website, acquiring a handful of quality links would serve its purpose. Submitting your website’s address directly to search engines is a good start but soon you have to find your place within the millions of websites in the web. In establishing your identity in the internet establishing quality links, inbound or outbound, is no longer an option but now a necessity.

Value

Did you know that one of the determining factors of your rank with search engines is measured by the links pointing to your site? From the Google’s perspective, a link counts as one vote and the value and importance of that vote depends on the source of that link. If a link is coming from a reputable website the better the quality. Well, Google’s computation of PageRank (PR) is quite complicated and we won’t dwell on that, what we are emphasizing here is that links provide value to your website. Not only Google, Yahoo and MSN also measure the importance of your web pages based on external links pointing to them.

Traffic

First, Google says if you have a high PR, the chances of your site landing on the front page of search results is most likely. So link building is a process that becomes an integral part in maintaining your website. You must acquire inbound links as much as possible from reputable websites and if possible choose websites similar to yours. Likewise, try to create outbound links to good websites and avoid linking to spammy websites. Secondly, link building is a great source of traffic to your website, you are sending invitation to others whenever you leave behind your link. So always leave your link when you leave a comment, join forums, join social networking sites, join blog networks, send an email, post your resume etc. Just make sure you do it professionally not with the intent to spam. We will discuss all of these in detail in future posts.
